Art Foundation Work

My Art Foundation Course post A-levels saw me branching out into new mediums and ways of creative thinking. It developed areas I already had an understanding of, and challenged me with new ones.

My work in the 2D mediums is so far limited, only really starting to engage with them now, as I had never considered that there might be something in them for me, as my brother’s talents in drawing, painting and more traditional artistic techniques already overshadowed my abilities. However through my experimentation with now a plethora of techniques, I have found my appreciation and understanding of the medium to be highly enriched, and I have learned that out of all of them, I seem to have a love of Lino and printing.

My experience in 3D mediums was rudimentary until now, something I did in my free time as a hobby, not as a serious art project. But through my Foundation, I pushed myself to think creatively about how I used these techniques, and came out with a new understanding of my own capabilities, as well as the effects material, texture, size and form contribute to a piece.

I have always adored games, and choose your own adventure, text based games are not an exception. They have always fascinated me with their depth and complexity, and yet crucial simplicity that makes them work so well. So naturally on my Foundation Course, in order to expand my practices in 4D work – a medium I was already experienced in – I wanted to give myself a challenge and code my own game.

Beginning to think about university, and what types of artistic endeavours I wanted to pursue in the future, I found that textiles, costume and set design, and the general production design aspect of film and moving image was ideal: combining storytelling with physical creation. So for this project I set out to develop, refine, and explore my textiles work in relation to one of my favourite aspects of cinema, video games, and creative thinking: environmental storytelling. So I made a cloak.
