The Essex Serpent was, in my mind, the culmination of all my research and work at the time; utilising cinematic overlays, pacing, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, as well as higher level colour grading, as inspired by my research on Sandra Bartocha. This short film is part of my Lore Of The Land collection, it aims to evoke an ominous, unsettling atmosphere that sets the viewer ill-at-ease. Inspired by the folk lore of The Essex Serpent, it tells the story of a young journalist who has caught wind of a mysterious serpent sighted at Thorrington Mill’s creek. Going to investigate, they find even more than they had hoped…
I’m so immensely proud of this piece, and despite the struggle of finding a plot, the time of editing it, and the research that went into it: it all paid off.
