The Lantern Man is my first highly edited sequence of images and part of my Lore Of The Land collection. They aim to tell the story of the Lanternman, a folk lore that originates in the fenlands of old England. This creature is similar to that of the Will-O’-The-Wisp, but much more active and aggressive; where the Will-O’-The-Wisp lures unsuspecting travellers off the path to dangerous land, the Lanternman actively seeks to drag those wandering the Fens too late at night to a watery grave. The tell tale sign that the Lanternmen are after you is seeing a flickering orange glow, similar to that of an oil lantern, moving through the reeds. It is said the Lanternmen are attracted to the sound of whistling, as well as lights of your own, so don’t think that the warm glow of a torch will protect you. The only way to avoid this malicious entity is by dropping to your knees, kissing the ground, and not. Looking. Up.
I have a sort of love-hate relationship with this collection, as the drastic editing it had to undergo fluctuates in my mind between “Ooooo I love how that turned out” and “that is possibly the worst looking thing I’ve ever made”. But still, the hours of work I put and valuable photoshop skills I gained were well worth the effort, and I’m very glad I tried branching out into post production, considering my flat out refusal to do any before this project.
